As promised (and in celebration of the fact that MaoYuu is being animated by Spice&Wolf staff), some Schwarz-related news:

All three books have been acquired, and are being scanned. Once we figure out how to actually do that efficiently, it should be only a short while before actual translation starts (with luck, around Obon). Either way, it's progress.

  3. ^^ Great news.

This is kind makes me want to help too. I can help you do the editing and prof reading if you want.

Also, I really do think it could help you a lot. At least consider putting this project on BakaTsuki.
If you think it is too much trouble to manage the wiki, I am willing to do it, naturally all the credits will go the translator.

    1. I'm not quite sure what benefits that would bring... isn't BakaTsuki more like crowdsourcing? (though to be honest I don't know much about that project). Of course, that's great for other people to take up the project if for some reason I stop translating, and in that case I'd try to make scans available for whoever wishes to continue, but since I've no intention of stopping yet, I'm not sure how beneficial that is... I don't know, you can email me or something if you really think it's a good idea.

  4. @Mister V
Will you use "Sylwia" instead of "Sylvia" in your translation of Schwarzesmarken?

    1. Sylwia seems a bit more authentic, since she's Polish.

  5. Can you make your releases of Schwarzesmarken to be apt for Kindle and other ereaders? Putting the header and footer fucks up the whole format to unexpected limits. When I wanted the preview of it to be on my kindle I had to manually delete all of that and then transform it into mobi and still with that there were format errors.

    1. Thanks for the heads up. I'd actually considered releasing it in fb2, since I read most stuff on my phone in that format. Have you tried calibre for conversion? I'm going to see what I can do with that for the full release of the first book, since it's the only prog I use basically.

    2. Yeah, I use calibre for conversion, the problem is still the header and the page number, having to delete it manually is a pain. With 65 pages it's doable, but if I have to do it with a full book...

Also, I moved all notes to the end, so they don't cut in the middle of a page or anything like that.

About the rest, not much problem, having a pic a bit earlier or later doesn't really matter, since they just help the narration, they're not actually THAT important.

Thanks a lot for your work and for translating this novels.

  6. How's the progress with the translation going?

    1. Let's say we're wrapping up chapter 2.

I'm only doing it a couple hours a day after work though, and we're not going to release by chapters, so until we're done with the whole book... I'd expect something like a month, give or take a couple of weeks (yes, it's that vague). Seeing the disgrace that is TE gives me a boost of enthusiasm though.

  8. Hi Mister V,

BakaTsuki is in a way crowd sourcing, but not exactly. Lets us say you put your project there.
First of all there are rules to them, so you can announce on which volumes/chapters you are going to work on and no else is going to intrude on your work without your permission ^^
Nor does it mean that you are obliged to have any time schedule, it is all voluntary work.
I do not believe that if you post the project all of the sudden another translator will appear and say he wants to work on the project too (there are a lot of projects and not really enough translators), however if that will happened you can tell him that you want to do the translation completely by yourself and he will back off(cannot guaranty, however that has happened before), or you can simply tell him to work on the third volume while you do the first two, or something similar to that.
Everything done there is voluntary and they have done & are doing many projects.
If it is a pain for you, I or someone from BT staff can manage all the small details of managing the wiki page.

As for benefits, I guess the biggest benefit is that a lot more people are going to read the translation and realize how truly good MuvLuv is.
At the same time when you upload something, people(editors, QC's, or just random people) will be able to give feedback on grammar, translation, ect. Forums can be used to make discussions that can be of assistance for terms or general talk.
Also, if you will post your project there, it would be more likely that some other translator will want to translate other MuvLuv novels, so it is good for the series in general ^^

I am sure you are doing translation because it is fun for you, I think people would be glad to know that project is in progress and be able to somehow participate in the process.
Personally I want to read Schwarzesmarken from start till the end. If I can make it go a bit faster or at least be part of the process it would be rather great.

    Best regards
ps. could not find your email on the blog.... please send me an email to the.loli.dragon@gmail.com, or make it visible for all at your blog profile page ^^ thank in advance.

  9. Just a quick question out of curiosity,

Out of the 22 chapters mentioned on the official website, http://schwarzesmarken.jp/story22.html, how many are included in the existing three collected volumes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You know, I've no idea, since I just bought the books and shipped them off for scanning.
I think each light novel volume has 4 chapters, but I've no idea if they're the same as the ones on the website. Would be somewhat strange if they already have material for six books but have only published three.

  10. How as the translation been going?

  11. Project seems to have gone silent for quite a while now. How are things coming along? Busy with real life?

    ReplyDelete
  12. So late August chapter 2 was being wrapped up, late October it's being checked for typos,

I take it Mister V is quite busy with IRL.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Progress still continue? or its stalled? or abandoned?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Even if progress is slow and he's busy in the land of work, it would be nice to at least have MisterV chip in every now and again to let us know he's not dead, and things are still happening.

  15. How dead is this?
